After the last three derby wins in a row, 1. FC Köln have no chance in Gladbach this time.

Florian Kainz becomes a tragic figure.

Borussia's 5:2 could have been even higher.

Mönchengladbach - Borussia Mönchengladbach redeemed themselves with a clear 53rd Bundesliga derby win against 1. FC Köln for last week's 5-1 loss at Werder Bremen.

In the 95th first division Rheinderby, coach Daniel Farke's team defeated their arch-rivals 5-2 (2-1) on Sunday.

The win was also okay at this altitude.

Goals by Marvin Friedrich (27th minute), Ramy Bensebaini (45th + 2, penalty kick / 76th), captain Lars Stindl (47th) and Marcus Thuram 5: 2 (90th + 1) ensured in front of 54,042 spectators in a sold-out Borussia -Park for the first Gladbach derby victory after three defeats in a row.

Three days after the 0-1 draw in the Conference League against Partizan Belgrade, Florian Kainz became a tragic figure for Cologne.

The offensive player initially scored with a penalty kick to equalize in the meantime (31'), but before the break caused Bensebaini to convert the penalty for Borussia and was also sent off with a yellow card.

Denis Huseinbasic scored the second FC goal in the 83rd minute.

With 15 points from nine games, Gladbach has now passed Cologne (13) in sixth place in the Bundesliga table.

From the beginning there was fire in many intense duels.

Referee Sven Jablonski gave out two yellow cards in the first ten minutes - one of them for Kainz.

The Cologne team attacked Borussia very high - the Farke team in Bremen couldn't cope with that at all.

Farke, however, gave the same starting XI a chance to make amends and was rewarded for it.

In fact, Borussia felt a different intensity than a week ago.

This time, the Gladbachers mostly playfully freed themselves from the aggressive Cologne pressing.

Borussia also deservedly took the lead in a derby for the first time in two years.

Friedrich scored a shoulder from a corner by national player Jonas Hofmann for the first time since moving from 1. FC Union Berlin last winter for the Lower Rhine team.

The quick equalizer was unfortunate from Gladbach's point of view.

When Cologne first counterattacked, Hofmann and Kainz went to the ball at the same time in the penalty area, but Cologne was a bit faster on the ball and was hit by Hofmann.

Jablonski only decided on a penalty after studying the video images, which the fouled player converted in his 100th competitive game for FC.

Kainz gave Gladbach the lead again before the break, this time ramming his elbow in Hofmann's face in a dogfight in his own penalty area.

The offensive player also saw the second yellow card for the action and had to take a shower early.

As usual, Bensebaini converted safely from the point and restored the deserved lead at the break.

Against now only ten Cologne players, Gladbach's captain Stindl made the preliminary decision early in the second round.

With an untenable shot from almost 25 meters, the veteran collected his 100th scorer point in the Borussia jersey, which Stindl emotionally cheered with a run across almost the entire pitch.

After that, the Cologne team threatened to break up completely outnumbered.

However, Borussia were no longer determined enough in the end or lacked the necessary luck.

Unlike a week ago, when Cologne turned the game against Borussia Dortmund to a 3-2 win at home, this time they didn't come close.
