Around six million people were able to cast their votes in Lower Saxony in the last state election of the year.
Now that the polling stations have closed, counting has begun.
According to the first projections, Prime Minister Stephan Weil's SPD is ahead with 33.3 percent.
It was followed by the CDU with 27.6 percent.
The top candidates of both parties had already announced before the election that they wanted to govern with the Greens in the future - and thus end the grand coalition.
These are in third place with 14 percent.
The AfD follows behind with 11.6 percent.
The party was able to significantly improve its result from 2017.
At that time, the AfD came to 6.2 percent.
The FDP comes to 5 percent in the first extrapolation and must therefore fear for their entry into the state parliament.
According to the first projection, the left will not make it into the state parliament.
