An explosion at the Crimea bridge in Russia as a result of a fuel tank fire.

Divers began today (Sunday) to examine the damage caused to the Crimea Bridge, which connects Russia to the Crimea Peninsula and collapsed following the powerful truck explosion.

Traffic on the bridge, which was shut down for a day, should return during the day.

The Crimean bridge collapsed yesterday following the explosion of a truck, apparently from a bomb.

The bridge, which serves as a significant supply route for the Russian forces in Ukraine, was significantly damaged after a fire broke out on the spot and parts of the bridge collapsed into the water.

The 12-mile-long bridge is a flagship project of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who himself opened it to traffic in 2018. It was built at a reported cost of $3.6 billion by a company owned by Arkady Rotenberg, Putin's former judo partner.

As of today, the bridge is the only direct link between Russia and the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine about eight years ago.

Most of the food, fuel and equipment supplies go through it to the port of Sevastopol in Crimea, which is the mythical home base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine last February, the transportation route has become even more necessary for it.

This is due to the needs of the Russian forces on the peninsula, for whom many supplies pass through the bridge on a daily basis.

The Russian Ministry of Defense responded to the incident, claiming that Russia has the option of providing full supplies to the forces even in the absence of the bridge - through other land and sea routes.
