The French Academy in Rome is revamping its interior and opening up its residences to crafts. Refurnished historic halls, rooms redecorated by designers and artists and the entry of crafts into its walls: the Villa Medici in Rome is embarking on a program intended to give it a new identity.

Founded in 1666 by Louis XIV, the French Academy in Rome took up residence in this Renaissance villa in 1803.

Located on Mount Pincio, the villa was spectacularly restored by the painter Balthus, who held its presidency in the 1960s and 1970s. He left a sumptuous garden, heritage pieces prized by visitors and VIPs.

And a decoration not always up to par with the places, the sofas without charm clashing for example in the reception rooms.

The transformation, thanks to the artists and the National Furniture depots, will take place in several stages: the artistic salons, first, the heritage rooms, then the nine rooms, finally, which anyone can rent.
