The new Omicron variant virus strain is heating up globally. The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said that one imported case of BA.2.75.2 and the first case of the XBB.1 sub-strain in Hong Kong were found, both of which were asymptomatic infections.
Among them, the XBB.1 patient is a 50-year-old female who arrived in Hong Kong from the United States on September 25, and was found to be diagnosed on September 27.
10 more patients died today, involving 3 men and 7 women, aged between 49 and 94, of whom 3 had received 4 injections.
The average death rate on the 7th was 0.165%, a slight increase from yesterday.

Xiao Jieheng, associate professor of the Department of Medical Technology and Informatics of the Polytechnic University, said that XBB.1 is a fusion of the BA.2.75 and BA.2.10 lineages. Although the immune escape ability is temporarily the highest, the mutation of the virus in the N protein and E protein is not large, so it is critically ill The rate is still low, "it won't make T cells completely unrecognized by viruses." He continued, he believes that with more and more exchanges with foreign countries, there will be more mutant virus strains in the future, but as long as the virus is a descendant of Omicron, "It won't turn bad all of a sudden," so citizens don't need to worry too much.
He pointed out that it is difficult to estimate whether this will become a mainstream virus strain for the time being, but after XBB.1 entered the community in Singapore, the number of cases has increased.
Liang Zichao, a respiratory specialist, said that at present, the patients diagnosed with XBB.1 in the world are all mild, and there is little information about the virus, so they all rely on laboratory data analysis.
He said that XBB.1 had the most impact on monoclonal antibodies or made them ineffective, but it did not affect the efficacy of current oral antiviral drugs.
As for transmission, he believes that laboratory data cannot fully reflect the growth rate and survival advantages of the virus in the real world, and it is temporarily difficult to assess its infectivity.
He also pointed out that recently, Hong Kong has done more virus genetic analysis, coupled with the increase in the number of immigrants, "the occasional discovery (new mutated virus) is within expectations", XBB.1 may not cause immediate risk, but the government should still pay attention to this virus development.

Another 25 classes in 23 schools will be suspended for seven days.
