Dismay and great sadness in Hausham: former mayor Hugo Schreiber died suddenly and unexpectedly.

His legacy to the community is great.

Hausham

– Hugo Schreiber was not always in a hurry in his life.

"I was often rather late," he sneered in April 2016 when his successor Jens Zangenfeind (FWG) awarded him the honorary title of former mayor.

He only did his business studies at the Sparkasse when he was 30, married his wife Marianne when he was 34 and had his children Vroni and Andreas when they were 35 and 39.

However, his family, his many friends and companions have to say goodbye to Schreiber far too soon.

The former mayor died in the night from Monday to Tuesday at the age of 73.

Great consternation in the town hall

"It was with great dismay" that he received the news of the death of the youngest former mayor of the municipality of Hausham to date, Zangenfeind said in a press release yesterday afternoon.

"With Hugo Schreiber we are losing a dear person, good friend, caring husband, father and grandfather." The deepest sympathy of the entire community goes to the Schreiber's family, especially his wife Marianne.

“Hugo was always there for everyone who needed him.

We will never forget him and will always honor his memory,” says Zangenfeind.

From today, Wednesday, a book of condolence will be available in the town hall.

There is little doubt that the pages will fill up quickly.

"Hugo Schreiber was always firmly rooted in our community," said Zangenfeind.

Since his birth on June 25, 1949, Schreiber has lived in Hausham.

After elementary school and high school, he did an apprenticeship at the Kreissparkasse Miesbach.

From 1995 to 2004 he headed the bank's Hausham branches.

Schreiber also contributed his specialist knowledge of money to volunteer work.

For 42 years he managed the cash register of SG Hausham, for which he played for 17 years as an active footballer.

As a tobogganist, he didn't shy away from the thrill of speed either.

"Hugo was an outstanding athlete," says Zangenfeind.

In 1988, Schreiber took on even more responsibility as managing director of the sports association.

Only one term as mayor

The self-proclaimed late bloomer only entered local politics in 2002. He ran for the Free Voters for the Hausham municipal council.

After just one term in office, the business economist went all out: In 2008 he successfully applied for the mayoral office and thus to succeed Arnfried Färber (FWG), who retired.

Although there was only one term of office, Schreiber implemented a lot with the renovation of the elementary school and the teachers' house, the construction of a new building yard and gymnasium and numerous projects in the day-care centers.

Despite this, he never lost sight of the financial strength of his congregation.

However, the former mayor gained the most popularity in the town through "his social commitment and his lovable, humorous and humane manner", emphasizes Zangenfeind.

It was a point of honor that he grabbed the trash tongs and rubbish bag himself for the annual Ramadama campaign he initiated.

Full of joie de vivre, he always looked for pragmatic solutions, even in difficult situations.

Schreiber enriched the community partnerships with Levico Terme and Seiersberg-Pirka "through his commitment, his sociable and cheerful nature and his humor, which is known beyond all borders".

Lots of hobbies in retirement

In retirement, the former mayor devoted himself to his mineral collection, his self-made hut on the Huberspitz or mountain biking - "but only on the flat," as he once said.

He was reluctant to enter the big stage, which he had never actively sought during his tenure.

With one exception: at the traditional stollen sale by the (former) mayors of Hausham at the Christmas market in favor of the local newspaper’s “Readers help readers” fundraiser, he stood at the counter in all weathers.

Here, too, the citizens will miss him.

Your late bloomer, who had to go much too soon.
