The death toll from Hurricane Ian, one of the most violent in recent American history, which hit the southeast of the country at the end of September, reached 107 dead on Monday, October 10, local authorities said.

Florida alone, the hardest hit state, has at least 102 deaths, according to the latest figures from forensic authorities.

Five other people have died in North Carolina.

These official figures are subject to change, and some American media are reporting an even heavier toll.

Hurricane Ian is one of the deadliest hurricanes to hit the United States since the turn of the century.

Its toll, however, remains much lower than that of Katrina, which devastated Louisiana and killed 1,800 people in 2005.

Ian, a category 4 hurricane when it made landfall in Florida, had submerged entire neighborhoods, destroying homes, bridges or power lines.

The hurricane then weakened as it moved towards the Atlantic, before strengthening again and reaching South Carolina, also affecting North Carolina.

Authorities said it would take months and $50 billion or more to rebuild Florida's devastated coastal areas.
