Against the background of Russia's growing insinuations that it will not hesitate to use any means - including nuclear ones - to protect the territories it annexed in Ukraine and its sovereignty, on Wednesday the West came out with the sharpest threat yet against Moscow.
A senior NATO official told The Guardian that the Kremlin's use of nuclear weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine would change the nature of the conflict and actually lead to an active war between blocs. ] and potentially from the NATO alliance itself."
According to the source, it is believed that the nuclear threats from the Russian ruler are intended to deter the West from directly intervening militarily in the fighting.
He added - similar to what President Joe Biden and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said recently - that if President Vladimir Putin uses unconventional weapons, it will have "unprecedented consequences for Russia."
As I recall, in Putin's recent speech he announced the recruitment of hundreds of thousands to the battlefield and emphasized that he is not "blundering" when it comes to threats that he will use all means, which was interpreted by many as a threat to use "tactical" nuclear weapons that supposedly limit their damage to the battlefield (although in practice the fallout will reach far beyond).
Biden made it clear that such a move would lead to "devastating" results but did not elaborate and his adviser Sullivan said that the Russian move would have "catastrophic consequences" for Moscow.
Now it seems that the Western party is raising the bar in threats and in fact confirms that the West will not tolerate a military confrontation with Russia if it crosses the red line it has set.
Until now, the West has been content with providing massive economic and military aid to Kiev, which in recent months has managed to recapture large parts that were under Russian control during the seven months of the war.
