The new prefect of police of Paris Laurent Nunez maintains

"at this stage"

the unfavorable opinion of his predecessor Didier Lallement on the project of the town hall of redevelopment of the surroundings of the Eiffel Tower, he explained Wednesday October 12 to the Council of Paris.

“There are indeed concerns with regard to the studies which have been produced, a certain number of uncertainties which caused my predecessor to issue an unfavorable opinion, which I obviously confirmed at this stage”

, declared the new prefect. , who succeeded Didier Lallement at the end of July, during his first appearance on the municipal council.

His predecessor had notoriously tense relations with the mayor Anne Hidalgo, in particular on the latter's projects aimed at reducing the place of the car in the capital, recalling each time that traffic fell within his competence.

In May, he had made known in a letter to Anne Hidalgo

"his opposition to this plan to restrict traffic in the Eiffel Tower sector"

, highlighting the

"significant traffic reports"

and

"deductions"

which could hinder the rescue intervention.

This letter included

"a number of concerns, uncertainties that I share, especially as we are approaching the period of the Olympic Games and that traffic may be aggravated

," said the prefect, stressing that the project concerned

" several sensitive sites"

in terms of security.

The project “implemented at 95%”

The town hall's project aims in particular to reduce the space occupied by cars on either side of the Pont d'Iéna, called to become

"the first green bridge in Paris"

, with the redevelopment of the Place du Trocadéro, where traffic will be reorganized in a half-moon.

The prefect took over the first deputy Emmanuel Grégoire on this subject:

“You said that we had validated (the project), it is not entirely correct”

.

“Yes, yes, there are still permits that have been authorized”

, immediately reacted Anne Hidalgo, seated next to the prefect for the first time.

At the beginning of October, the town hall gave up the small buildings planned at the foot of the Eiffel Tower for tourists and employees, after the controversy aroused by the felling of trees involved in these constructions.

The project remains on the whole

"implemented at 95%"

, said Emmanuel Grégoire, announcing the start of the rehabilitation of the very damaged lawn north of the Champ-de-Mars

"this very week"

.
