The chairman of the election committee for the 25th Knesset, Chief Justice Yitzhak Amit, today (Thursday) rejected the petition of the Yesh Atid party to declare Channel 14 "an active body in the elections". This, after stating that the party did not prove that the channel engaged in "election activity" Yesh Atid will pay NIS 20,000 in court costs, half of which goes to Channel 14 and half to Likud.
"Media bodies have an important position when it comes to exercising freedom of political expression, especially during elections," the judge wrote. The debate is such that their voice will prevail over all the other voices in the 'market of opinions' while harming equal opportunities in the elections."

"In this case, I am not required to determine whether the activity of Channel 14 is caught in the magnetic pole of 'election propaganda,' and this in view of the definition of 'election activity,'" Amit clarified.
"It seems that the legislator saw before his eyes the right to freedom of political expression, and accordingly narrowly defined what that 'election activity' is. As seen in this case, Yesh Atid did not show that the activity of Channel 14 on which it voted, falls within the scope of this narrow definition."
