The corona numbers in Munich are increasing rapidly, hospitals and nursing staff are overloaded.

The cardiologist Hans Theiss sees the Wiesn as the trigger - even though he was there himself.

Munich – For the Wiesn tapping on September 17, the cardiologist and CSU politician Hans Theiss did not miss the chance to drop by the Theresienwiese.

At the time, he posted a selfie on Twitter from the marquee and commented: "It's about to start - to a peaceful Wiesn!" Almost two weeks after the Oktoberfest, Theiss now describes the Wiesn as a "superspreader event" and speaks of dramatic consequences for the health system.

Corona virus in Munich: "Health care on the verge of collapse"

In a self-recorded video, the cardiologist on Twitter now warns of a collapse in the healthcare system: “Health care in Munich is on the verge of collapse.

This is mainly due to the high number of Covid-infected doctors and nurses after the Oktoberfest with a pronounced shortage of skilled workers," says Theiss.

For the cardiologist it is clear: The Oktoberfest was the trigger for the heavy burden in Munich's hospitals: "The Wiesn has become a superspreader event, the mouse doesn't bite off a thread."

"Have to massively strengthen the health system" - Theiss calls for help for clinics

However, it was foreseeable that the Oktoberfest would bring a sharp increase in the number of corona - the local incidence of corona also rose sharply in Straubing and Rosenheim after the local folk festivals.

However, this forecast did not keep Theiss from visiting the Wiesn.

Now the CSU politician presented the Oktoberfest as the reason for the loss of numerous nursing staff and the associated possible collapse of health care.

In the almost one-minute video, Theiss, who also works on the Munich City Council, makes clear demands: "I'm for normality - I was all the time during the pandemic - but one thing is also clear: we will only be able to hold out if we do that medical, the medical [staff], the health system massively strengthen.”

The CSU politician demands: “We have to invest a lot more money, we have to keep a lot more staff, we finally have to get loud!

We have to support this system as clearly as possible, otherwise it will collapse completely and we will not be able to afford normality.

The truth is so bitter!” In view of these statements, numerous Twitter users reminded him of his own visit to the Wiesn, almost a month earlier.

At that time, the cardiologist's Twitter account did not contain any warning words.

One thousand mark exceeded: current corona numbers from Munich

A connection between the increasing corona numbers and the Oktoberfest was obvious, but difficult to prove.

For example, the German epidemiologist and virologist Klaus Stöhr is not convinced of the "Wiesn effect".

The Robert Koch Institute reported a seven-day incidence of 1233.9 on October 13.

The thousand mark was already exceeded on October 7th, at the beginning of the month the corona incidence was 834.3.

However, the reported figures provide an incomplete picture of the overall situation.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI.

In particular, because not all people infected with corona have a PCR test done.

However, only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

In view of the high number of cases, Munich's nursing staff are already sounding the alarm: "The patients are piling up in the corridors," the works council of the Munich clinic warned in a fire letter in mid-October.
