He was missing for almost a month after a trip to the Berchtesgaden Alps: Now the emergency services have recovered the body of a 24-year-old.

Berchtesgaden – Now there is sad certainty: the 24-year-old climber who has been missing from the Hochkalter (Berchtesgaden Alps) since September 17 is dead. Emergency services were able to recover his body on Thursday (October 13).

The young man from Hanover had previously been missing for almost a month, although his backpack was discovered after just a few days.

After six days, rescuers stopped the intensive search measures in September.

Hochkalter (Berchtesgaden Alps): body of missing 24-year-old recovered

"An Austrian police helicopter with a police mountain guide on board discovered the lifeless body on a snow field in the south-west crash of the Hochkalter around 2 p.m.," said the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South on Friday morning in a press release.

The Berchtesgaden Police Inspectorate was then informed immediately, and two trained task forces set off with the support of the Edelweiß 2 police helicopter.

Around 4:30 p.m., the police mountain guides were able to locate the missing person lying on a snow field at an altitude of around 2,250 meters.

"The high temperatures have now let the snow recede so far that the missing person became visible," it said.

Deadly mountain drama on the Hochkalter: "Glad that this mission could now be completed"

The body was recovered and flown to the mountain rescue depot in Ramsau.

The cause of death is still under investigation.

However, the police have explicitly ruled out third-party fault or the involvement of other people.

"All the forces involved are extremely happy, also in the interests of the relatives, that this mission has now been completed," ended the press release at the end of the grueling measures.
