Environmentalists and experts have revealed that global warming threatens the extinction of penguins in East Antarctica.
"The number of penguins has decreased in the last 10 years by 43%, due to global warming that could cause the almost complete extinction of the Adelie penguin in East Antarctica," TASS quoted ecologist Louisa Emerson as saying.
Reports indicate that as a result of global warming, the melting of the polar ice, which is the natural habitat of the penguins, is accelerating, which complicates their access to water, meaning that they have difficulty obtaining food, and therefore are almost unable to feed their young, forcing them to move long distances from their nesting sites, leaving Their young are without care, which affects their number.
"What is worrying is the size and rate of decline in the penguin population, so immediate action must be taken to conserve them," said Jane Younger of the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at Australia's University of Samania.
It is noteworthy that Adelie penguins are about 70 cm long and weigh 4 to 6 kg and differ from other penguin species by having white rings around their eyes and a tuft of long feathers on their head.
