A group of lawmakers in the US Congress, from both House parties, submitted a request to the US Secretary of State to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the phenomenon of anti-Semitism in the organization, due to several incidents that have recently made headlines.
According to a report in the American Jewish newspaper "Jewish Insider", the group of legislators, led by two chairmen of the Anti-Semitism Committee, wrote to the American Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, and requested that he conduct a home inspection of the office.
In two different cases, swastikas were discovered in the offices of the Secretary of State, apparently drawn by employees there, and last week it was revealed that an employee of the office maintains an anti-Semitic blog, but so far, the employee has not been fired from his position.
"We appreciate the steps taken by you and President Biden immediately, after these incidents were revealed, to make it clear that anti-Semitism has no place in the State Department, in the Biden administration or anywhere in the world," the lawmakers wrote in their appeal.
"However, more must be done in order to protect the Jewish community and other religious minorities, at the State Secretariat. We understand and are grateful that actions on the subject have already been pioneered. We urge you to continue to investigate and deal with any incident of anti-Semitism and hatred within the State Department," added the legislators.
Although previous legislation obliges the Secretary of State to report to Congress every year on any investigation of anti-Semitic incidents, the legislators demand that the office regularly publish updates regarding the disclosure of cases of anti-Semitism at the State Secretariat.
In addition, the legislators demanded to improve the training for the employees of the ministry on anti-Semitism and the Jewish religion.
