Karim Benzema wins the Ballon d'Or 2022

Karim Benzema, forward for Real Madrid, won the 2022 Ballon d'Or on Monday. It is the first time that the French footballer has taken home this award.

Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona's Polish player, won the Gerd Müller Trophy on Monday, which is awarded to the best scorer of the year at the Ballon d'Or ceremony.

The Pole thanked the award, but above all he praised the footballer for whom he was named like this, the German Gerd Müller, who was a great scorer for the German national team and Bayern Munich (world champion in the national team, and leagues, cups and Champions League at his club).

Sadio Mané wins the Socrates Prize for his social work

Sadio Mané, a Senegalese footballer who plays for Bayern Munich, won the Socrates Prize this Monday at the 2022 Ballon d'Or, which is awarded for the first time this year and which recognizes the social work of footballers.

The 2022 Ballon d'Or ceremony kicked off this Monday at 2:30 pm ET at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Messi, fuera de la lucha por el Balón de Oro por primera vez en 17 años

En el año del Mundial, después de llevar a la selección Argentina a un invicto memorable y de ser campeón en Francia, Lionel Messi -ganador del premio en 2021- no es uno de los 30 candidatos al Balón de Oro 2022.

En los favoritos de aficionados y expertos, Messi no era el máximo favorito, pues muchos dan por hecho que será Karim Benzema -quien llevó al Real Madrid a un nuevo título de Champions League y de LaLiga de España-.

Es la primera vez que Messi -que es el máximo ganador de este galardón con siete- no está en la lista desde 2005. Tras su salida del Barcelona hace un año, Messi tuvo un rendimiento digno en el PSG en la temporada 2021-22, pero no espectacular como en años anteriores con el club culé: 6 goles en liga y con un desempeño para olvidar en Champions: fue eliminado en octavos por el Real Madrid.

En general, la temporada pasada de Messi con PSG estuvo muy por debajo de lo habitual en su carrera, anotando solamente 11 goles y repartiendo 15 asistencias en 34 partidos disputados entre Ligue 1, Copa de Francia y Champions League.

Este lunes conoceremos al ganador del Balón de Oro 2022, el cual es otorgado por la revista France Football.

De los 30 nominados para el premio de este año, Karim Benzema es uno de los que tienen mayores posibilidades de ganarlo, pues fue pieza fundamental para que el Real Madrid ganara su Champions League número 14 y LaLiga. En tanto, de las 20 nominadas para el premio femenino, destacan varias candidaturas, entre ellas la de Alexia Putellas, ganadora del galardón en 2021 y quien en enero ganó el premio The Best de la FIFA a jugadora del año.

Sin embargo, el Balón de Oro 2022 será atípico, pues es la primera vez en 17 años que Lionel Messi, el máximo ganador en la historia de este galardón, no está en la lista final de 30 nominados.
