In the nuclear dispute of the traffic light coalition, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has spoken a word of power.

The FDP applauds, the Greens want to advise.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) wants to accept the instruction from Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in the coalition dispute about the Akw runtimes.

The decision made by Scholz is "a way that I can work and live well with," said Habeck on Monday evening in the

.

In view of the deadlocked dispute between the Greens and the FDP on the nuclear issue, Scholz had previously decided that all three German nuclear power plants still on the grid could run until mid-April 2023.

+++ 8.34 p.m .:

The Greens parliamentary group leadership has announced consultations on the decision by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on the possible continued operation of the three remaining nuclear power plants.

"We take note that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is exercising his authority to set guidelines," said the parliamentary group leaders Katharina Dröge and Britta Haßelmann.

"We will now discuss with our parliamentary group how to deal with the Chancellor's decision."

It is "regrettable" that Scholz and the SPD are apparently ready to put the Emsland nuclear power plant into reserve operation, "although there is no factual or technical reason for this," said the two faction leaders.

"It is now clear that no new fuel rods will be procured and that all German nuclear power plants will finally be taken off the grid by April 15, 2023 at the latest."

Continued operation of the nuclear power plants: Söder criticizes

+++ 19.45:

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision to continue operating the remaining three German nuclear power plants as insufficient and disappointing.

"Is that all?

What a disappointment," Söder wrote on Twitter on Monday evening.

The problem is only adjourned.

"This is a solution to the traffic light dispute, but not for the electricity problem in Germany," argued Söder and warned: "The danger of a blackout in the coming year remains."

German nuclear power plants should be able to run until mid-April 2023

“The legal basis is being created to enable the power operation of the Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland nuclear power plants beyond December 31, 2022 until April 15, 2023 at the latest,” the letter says, addressed to Economics Minister Robert Habeck, Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP).

For days, the FDP and the Greens in particular argued about whether and for how long the three nuclear power plants that were still in operation should continue to be operated.

At a party congress over the weekend, the Greens decided to support so-called stretching operations for the two kilns Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 until mid-April 2023 if necessary.

The FDP, on the other hand, also wanted to keep the third Emsland nuclear power plant connected to the grid and run all three until 2024.

The reactivation of nuclear power plants that had already been shut down would also have been up for debate.

Chancellor Scholz: decision on nuclear power plants

Chancellor Scholz went on to say that "in parallel with this decision" an ambitious law to increase energy efficiency should be presented.

The political understanding of the economic ministries in the federal government and North Rhine-Westphalia with the energy company RWE on the coal phase-out in the Rhenish Revier should also be "implemented by legislation".

Among other things, the agreement provides for two lignite-fired power plants to run longer, until 2024, but to bring forward the phase-out of coal in the Rhenish mining area by eight years to 2030.

In his letter, Scholz asks the responsible ministers "to present the relevant regulatory proposals to the cabinet in a timely manner".

Lindner welcomed Scholz's decision.

"It is in the vital interest of our country and its economy that we maintain all energy production capacities this winter. The Chancellor has now created clarity," said Lindner.

First report from Monday, October 17, 6:31 p.m.:

Berlin – In the nuclear dispute of the traffic light coalition, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has spoken a word of power: All three German nuclear power plants still on the grid should be able to run until mid-April 2023, it says in one Scholz's letter to the federal cabinet published on Monday.

The chancellor referred to his authority within the federal government to issue guidelines.
