A 21-year-old man living near the victim's home was taken into police custody on Monday the day after the death of a 47-year-old woman, who was stabbed to death in the middle of the street in Nantes, a we learned from the prosecution.

," said Nantes public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul, adding that the custody had started on Monday morning.

Sunday at dawn, the victim, mother of four adult children, had been assaulted as she left for work.

The autopsy carried out on Monday morning “

showed the presence of 23 wounds, some of which were fatal, in particular at the level of the neck

”, indicated Mr. Gaudeul on Monday evening.

He did not specify whether or not the man in custody knew the victim, a central element of this case.

The facts occurred in the lower part of the Bellevue district, a priority district of Nantes, where "

this attack aroused great emotion (...) because several members of his family live in the immediate vicinity of the facts

", explained the prosecutor of the Republic during a press briefing on Sunday afternoon.

”.

The attack on this 47-year-old woman occurred three weeks after the rape of a 40-year-old woman on September 24 in downtown Nantes, sparking a heated debate over the city's security.
