Australia cancels recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital (Reuters)
The Israeli government is considering further response measures to the Australian government's decision to withdraw its recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel - this is what the head of the political formation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aliza Ben Nun, said today (Tuesday) to the Australian ambassador to Israel, Paul Griffith, during their meeting.
Ben Nunn told the Australian ambassador that Israel is very disappointed by his country's decision and also protested its timing - two weeks before the Knesset elections and during Sukkot.
"This is an unfortunate decision, which ignores the deep and eternal connection between Israel and its historical capital and is contrary to the good relations between Israel and Australia," said Ben Noon.
"The decision only encourages extremists in the Palestinian Authority to continue agitating the territory, endangers stability and goes against the spirit of the recent period in which significant progress was made in the relations between Israel and the countries of the Middle East."

The Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, said tonight in an official statement that the country no longer recognizes West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The minister also announced that the Australian embassy will remain in Tel Aviv.
Wong said that the country "will always be a friend of Israel, and will be committed to a two-state solution in which Israel and a future Palestinian state coexist, in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders."
According to her - Australia will not support an approach that would undermine such a situation.
