Melioid is on the rise. The source of the 15 cases in Sham Shui Po is still unknown. Burkholderia melioidosis exists in soil and stagnant water. Melioidosis spreads.

The Department of Health (DH) today (18th) also reminded the public not to touch soil and muddy water after a typhoon hits in order to avoid infection with melioidosis during a health talk on the prevention of infection with melioidosis in Sham Shui Po District.

In the lecture, the Department of Health also admitted that the exact source of melioidosis has not yet been found, and mentioned for the first time that there are many cases in Pak Tin Village, Shek Kip Mei. The Department has collected more than 100 environmental samples in Sham Shui Po, including Of the soil, water source and water source swab samples from the buildings where the infected person lived, 34 samples were all negative, and the others were still being tested.

The Department of Health continued that since there was no overlap in the whereabouts of the infected patients, it has been ruled out that the transmission is related to food or products, and the department will continue to trace the source of the transmission.

Regarding the test results and case details of environmental samples of melioidosis, we are awaiting further reply from the Department of Health.

The Department of Health held a seminar in Shek Kip Mei today, revealing that there are many cases in Pak Tin Estate, but the details are not available

The Centre for Health Protection announced earlier that a total of 29 human cases of melioidosis were recorded this year, of which 20 were in Sham Shui Po, and 17 of them were recorded from August to October.

The Department of Health held a health talk at the Shek Kip Mei Community Hall today to explain measures to prevent infection with melioidosis.

Yang Qianqian, a senior doctor from the Health Protection and Health Promotion Office of the Department of Health, said in the lecture that there were many cases in Pak Tin Estate, Shek Kip Mei, but did not disclose how many cases there were.

She also pointed out that the 17 cases recorded from August to October were distributed in 16 different buildings.

34 soil and water swab samples in Sham Shui Po were negative, the remaining samples are pending results

She revealed that the Department of Health had collected over 100 environmental samples in Sham Shui Po, including 16 soil samples, 42 water source samples from buildings where infected persons lived, and 26 water source swab samples, including 8 soil samples and 26 water source swab samples. The sub-samples are all negative, while the other sample cases are still being tested.

She said that since there was no overlap in the whereabouts of the infected patients, it has been ruled out that the transmission is related to food or products.

Yang Qianqian emphasized that the household contacts of the confirmed cases are all asymptomatic. He reiterated that human-to-human transmission of melioidosis is rare, and the public should not be overly concerned.

Regarding some members of the public who are concerned that it is difficult to distinguish between the symptoms of melioidosis and the symptoms of new coronary pneumonia, Yang Qianqian agrees that the symptoms of the two are similar, so the public should seek medical treatment as soon as possible when they have symptoms.

Chen Kaixin's lecture asked whether Nassar will set off another wave of melioidosis

The lecture started at 11:30 am, and the more than 150 seats in the venue were full. Before the start of the lecture, the Sham Shui Po District Commissioner once prevented the media from entering.

The Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council's Health Services Committee, Chan Hoi-yan, was also present and asked the DH staff present whether there was a high-level suspected source of transmission and whether Typhoon Nesat would set off another wave of melioid transmission.

In response, Yang Qianqian only pointed out that the recent typhoon Nasa may cause Burkholderia melioidosis in soil and muddy water to be exposed to the ground, and strong winds or rainstorms will make it easier for melioidosis bacteria to spread, which may increase the number of cases of melioidosis. Therefore, the public is urged to avoid contact with soil and muddy water in recent days, "especially after the wind blows, especially those with chronic illnesses or those with low immunity."

The Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council's Health Services Committee, Chen Kaixin, questioned that the main route of transmission of melioidosis is contact with soil and muddy water with Burkholderia. The Department of Health's environmental samples only contain 16 soil samples, which is too few.

Neighbors worry about Bishop Hill and Garton Hill as the source of transmission Chen Kaixin urges to increase the number of tests

After the lecture, Chen Kaixin said that many neighbors have expressed their concerns to her recently: "Many neighbors will go to Bishop Hill and Garden Hill for morning walks, and they are worried that the fruit will be the source of transmission." She questioned that the main transmission of melioidosis The way is to contact soil and muddy water with Burkholderia. The DH's environmental samples are only 16 soil samples and 26 water swab samples, which are too few. We urge the DH to strengthen the collection of environmental samples in the Sham Shui Po area.

She also pointed out that the DH has only held one health seminar on melioidosis so far, and many citizens may not be able to participate, and called on the DH to strengthen education and publicity.
