Shakira has had one of the most challenging years of her life, according to what she herself said.

To the separation of her 12-year-old partner and father of her children, Gerard Piqué, is added the mediatic case of alleged tax evasion that she faces in Spain and that could represent a severe sanction.

For this reason, the release of her new single, "Monotonía", has been one of the most anticipated of the Colombian artist in years.

The anticipation of the fans was that the song, which Shakira recorded in conjunction with the Puerto Rican urban artist Ozuna, refers to or at least can be related to the breakup with Piqué.

The advances released on social networks —a heart pierced by a sword and a letter of spite, of heartbreak— allowed us to think so.

"It wasn't your fault / It wasn't mine either / I knew this would happen," the song reads.

Shakira had announced that the album she completed makes her very excited.

"When she felt that I lacked the strength, as if she had no legs, those days she wrote songs, and I felt that she revived and came out stronger," she told ELLE Spain.

The album that "Monotonía" is on, as he announced, has songs in English and Spanish and goes through different genres.

"Probably the darkest stage of my life"

In September, in an interview with ELLE Spain, Shakira said that the separation process has been "incredibly difficult", especially due to the attention of the press and the impact of it on her children.

"Sometimes I feel like this is all a bad dream and that I'm going to wake up at some point. But no, it's real," she said, explaining that she is disappointed to see how the case has been "vulgarized" in the media.

Shakira pointed out that this year has been perhaps the most difficult because she faces a case for alleged tax fraud in the Spanish Justice, which asks for more than 8 years in prison.

Shakira failed to reach an agreement with the Spanish Prosecutor's Office on charges of tax evasion and will go to trial insisting on her innocence.

Shakira heartbreak anthems

Since her first album, "Pies descalzos", Shakira has released several songs that became anthems of past love, heartbreak and "tusa".

In this category is the essential "Anthology", which she composed when she was just 17 years old after falling in love with her at 15, according to the artist's own account.

The list also highlights "No", his collaboration with the late Gustavo Cerati, and the recent "I congratulate you", which many have also interpreted as an allusion to his relationship with the Spanish soccer player, whom he met in 2010 before the World Cup from South Africa, in which she performed the official song "Waka Waka".

"To complete you I broke into pieces / They warned me but I didn't listen / I realized that yours is false / It was the straw that broke the camel's back," says the song he did together with Rauw Alejandro, who was nominated for the This year's Grammy.
