The senior Russian military commander in Ukraine hinted yesterday (Tuesday) that Moscow's grip on the city of Kherson in the south of the country is weakening.

General Sergei Sorobikin, who was recently appointed to command the Russian army in Ukraine, said in his first interview since his appointment to state television that the situation in Kherson "is not easy now" and that the priority in the south is to protect civilians and soldiers.

"Difficult decisions cannot be ruled out," he said but did not elaborate.

In recent days, Russia has been attacking Ukraine with missiles and suicide drones. Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that 30% of the country's energy infrastructure was destroyed by the missiles. "Ukraine is under fire from the occupiers.

They continue to do what they do best - terrorize and kill civilians," he said.

Kyiv has recently put a damper on the news in the south of the country, leading to speculation that it is preparing for a new attack on Kherson.

"When the Ukrainians announce a news blackout, it is a sign that something is happening. They have done this in the past when there was a major attack," Michael Clarke, former director general of the Royal United Services Institute, told Sky News

. Yesterday, that Russia is transferring citizens to the west bank of the Dnieper River from districts north of Kherson, where the Ukrainian forces have advanced in recent weeks, in order not to delay the movement of the Russian army.

Kherson is one of four provinces that Russia recently conquered and annexed, and it has great strategic importance.

The only land route to Crimea, which Russia captured in 2014, passes through Khaos, as well as the mouth of the Dnieper River, a 2,200 km long river that runs through Ukraine.

Since early October, Ukrainian forces have broken through Russia's front lines and advanced south along the West Bank, aiming to cut off Russian forces from supply lines and escape routes. The governor of Rostov, which borders Ukrainian territories annexed to Russia, said his province is ready to accept anyone who wants to leave Kherson.

According to the Ukrainian military, its troops have retaken 600 settlements in the past month, including 75 in the Kherson region. An escape of civilians from Harson would be a blow to the fact that Russia claims to have annexed 15% of Ukraine and incorporated an area the size of Portugal into Russia. The Kremlin has sent its best soldiers to the area to protect the west bank of the river, but the force can only get supplies from the other side of the river.
