In the British House of Commons, Liz Truss fought for her political future.

For the time being with success.

But the criticism is making waves – several appointments for her end are making the rounds.

London – Liz Truss is threatened with an almost grotesquely short term as British head of government: just six weeks after her appointment, the Conservatives are threatened with extinction.

In the House of Commons, however, the Tory politician once again defended herself against allegations and demands for his resignation on Wednesday (October 19).

"I'm a fighter, not a slacker," Truss said there.

This was preceded by a provocative question from opposition leader Keir Starmer: he had asked why Truss was still there.

On the agenda in the House of Commons was the first Question Time with the Prime Minister in the British House of Commons following her humiliating U-turn on tax plans last week and earlier this week.

The conservative head of government came under heavy pressure at the meeting.

Several opposition politicians called on her directly to step down.

Truss countered allegations that she had driven the country's economy to the wall by stating that the economic situation was generally difficult.

She urged Starmer to "face economic realities" - for which she reaped malice and angry heckling from opposition benches.

However, Starmer had several tips at hand.

“A book is being written about the Prime Minister's tenure.

Apparently it's supposed to come out by Christmas," the Labor politician quipped.

Or also: “Last week the Prime Minister stood here and promised no cuts in spending.

This week the Chancellor of the Exchequer announces a new wave of cuts.

What about a prime minister whose promises don't last even a week?”

Truss “survived the day” – but Tories also set an ultimatum: two dates for leaving the course

The head of government, who had gotten heavily on the defensive, was spared criticism from within her own ranks.

Speculations that she could have bought the loyalty of the Brexit hardliners with a hard line towards Brussels in the dispute over the status of Northern Ireland initially seemed to be confirmed.

When asked by a member of parliament, Truss assured that she wanted to stick to a bill that would undermine the agreement known as the Northern Ireland Protocol from the Brexit Treaty.

However, individual MPs were still putting pressure on in the afternoon.

Tory MP Steve Double told the BBC's World at One that Truss had until the end of next week (October 28) to convince her fellow party members.

Another Tory MP, Nigel Mills, called on the show for the government to "do its homework".

Group colleague Miriam Cates did not want to commit to the GB News broadcaster whether Truss would still be party leader in the next election.

Labor currently has a comfortable lead in the polls.

According to a report in the Telegraph

, William Wragg, a Conservative backbencher,

has already submitted a "letter of no confidence".

The

Guardian

named Monday 31 October as another explosive date.

Then there would be an interim budget and an economic forecast.

Until then, the parliamentarians could exercise restraint so as not to further unsettle the economy, it said.

In an initial analysis, the newspaper also judged that Truss "did enough to get through the day" on Wednesday.

After a press conference last Friday - at which the Prime Minister appeared "weak and broken" - that was not necessarily to be expected.

"Your position is probably secured for the next few hours," was the newspaper's verdict.

Truss under pressure: Prime Minister fires communications chief ahead of sensitive meeting

Truss has only been in office since the beginning of September.

Nevertheless, she is already under massive pressure in her own conservative Tory party.

Due to a lack of counter-financing, your tax cut package had led to turbulence on the financial markets and to severe resentment in the ranks of the governing party.

As a result, Truss initially had her confidant, then Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng, withdraw the planned tax cut for top earners.

She released him on Friday.

The new Treasury Secretary Jeremy Hunt almost completely overturned the planned financial package on Monday.

Starmer accused Truss on Wednesday of "conducting an economic experiment on the British public".

Shortly before Question Time began, it was announced that Truss' chief communications officer, Jason Stein, had been suspended and that disciplinary proceedings had been instituted against him.

He had reportedly made disparaging remarks to journalists about a former minister.

He is said to have threatened to raise the issue at Question Time in Parliament.

Truss didn't want to risk that.
