Gas price cap and electricity price brake: Up to 1400 euros relief - That's how much you save in concrete terms

The electricity and gas price brake should relieve German households.

A sample calculation shows how much more money this leaves in the account at the end of the year.

Berlin – The Bundestag has cleared the way for the gas price brake and the electricity price brake.

The loan for the 200 billion euro protective shield was approved and nothing stands in the way of the "double boom" announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

Among other things, the money is intended to relieve German consumers, who are severely affected by rising energy costs.

Gas price brake: How high is the relief really?

But what does that mean in concrete terms for consumers?

How much money does the government's price cap save?

The comparison portal Check24 calculated this using various sample households.

The following table shows the annual relief from gas and electricity price caps depending on consumption.

A family with a gas consumption of around 20,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) would be relieved by around 1056 euros.

For a single with a consumption of 5000 kWh, it is 264 euros.

Not to forget: the Federal Government's expert commission had proposed a one-off payment.

In December, a monthly deduction is then to be taken over in full.

This would relieve all gas customers in Germany by around five billion euros.

However, it must also be considered that the gas price brake will only apply from March 2023.

In the first two months of the year, the high prices still have to be paid.

Electricity price brake: This is how high the relief is

A cap is also being discussed for the electricity price.

If this worked exactly like the gas price brake, a family with a fairly high electricity consumption of 5000 kWh would save around 348 euros.

For a single with an annual consumption of 1500 kWh, the savings would be 104 euros per year.

So anyone who uses gas for heating would be around 368 euros per year with both reductions in a single household.

For a family it would be a total of 1404 euros relief.
