After not winning enough support: Johnson withdraws from the race for the prime minister | Israel today

The former prime minister will not compete for receiving his scholarship after only 59 members of parliament expressed their support for him.

The former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Boris Johnson, announced tonight (Sunday) his withdrawal from the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister, after he failed to reach 100 conservative members of parliament to support his candidacy.

Yesterday, several media outlets in the country reported that Johnson managed to reach the necessary support threshold, but it seems that the reports were erroneous and that only 59 members of parliament signed their support for the former prime minister.

The current front-runner in the election, which is expected to be held in an expedited process on Friday, is former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who enjoys strong support in the conservative party.

Sunak, the son of Indian immigrants from East Africa, was in the previous race for the leadership of the party the preferred candidate of the conservative establishment, especially of the party delegates in the parliament, but did not enjoy too wide support among the party members.

Despite the humble family background in which he grew up, the 42-year-old Sunak, because of his professional past as a banker and his marriage to the daughter of an Indian billionaire, is considered a representative of the elites and is cut off from the middle classes and the popular classes who are now the majority of supporters of the Conservative Party.

Sunak and his wife are on the list of the richest people in the UK, with an estimated fortune of £730 million.

In doing so, Sunak became the first senior politician in British history to be included in this list.

Many members of the Conservative Party, and not a few members of the faction in Parliament, do not forgive Sonak for being one of the first to raise the miracle of rebellion against Boris Johnson, a move that shortly led to Johnson's resignation before he was removed from office.

However, in view of the deepening economic crisis in Britain, Sonak - who served as finance minister in Johnson's government and dealt well with the economic consequences of the corona epidemic, is seen as the most suitable candidate to lead the Conservative Party and Britain, after the failure of Truss' attempt to implement a neoliberal economic policy extreme
