The battle for support raged all weekend.
While Rishi Sunak quickly reached the threshold of 100 MP sponsorships (out of 357) needed to take part in the Downing Street race, Boris Johnson continued to chase rallies before the close on Monday noon on Sunday.
And the whole country remained suspended in the incredible suspense surrounding the return of the ousted Prime Minister three months earlier.
By officially declaring himself a candidate, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer posed as the savior of a country in a sorry state.
“
I want to fix our economy, unite our party and take action for our country
,” Sunak wrote on Twitter.
All with “
integrity, professionalism and responsibility
”, a spade at his rival Johnson.
The former finance minister of “BoJo” clearly appeared as the preferred choice of the Tory deputies, clearly leading the race.
Importantly for Sunak, he was able to rally figures from the right of the party…
