On video: Gantz refers to the appointment of the next chief of staff (video: streaming)
The government approved today (Sunday) at its weekly meeting the appointment of Major General Herzi Halevi as the 23rd Chief of Staff of the IDF.
According to the government's decision, the appointment will come into effect on January 17, and will be extended for three years, with an option to extend for a fourth year.
"The critical component of Israeli strength is the quality of the IDF's fighters and commanders," Prime Minister Yair Lapid said at the cabinet meeting. "Major Halevi today joins a long and select chain of thoughtful and bold commanders who knew how to march the IDF forward."
Defense Minister Benny Gantz, who chose Behavi for the post, said yesterday at a conference he held in Modiin in preparation for the approval of his appointment that as Chief of Staff he "will know how to continue to strategically lead the IDF to the right places where the IDF needs to be."

Halevi's appointment process began even before the elections and ran into complications and legal difficulties because of the election period, and was delayed mainly because of the government's initial decision to appoint retired judge Meni Mazuz as head of the Committee for Senior Appointments for a period of eight years.
The High Court invalidated the decision in light of the limitations that apply to a transitional government during an election period and ordered the government to appoint only a temporary chairman to the committee.
In light of Mazuz's refusal to accept a temporary appointment, the government was forced to replace the chairman and last month retired judge Eliakim Rubinstein agreed to replace him and complete Halevi's approval process.

Last week, Halevi's appointment was approved by the Committee for Senior Appointments, which determined by a majority of votes to recommend the appointment to the government that there is no flaw in the aspects of the merit degree.
One of the members of the committee, Prof. Talia Einhorn, voted against the recommendation, on the grounds of opposition to the appointment during an election period and by a transitional government.
