The number of pensioners who depend on basic security is increasing.
According to Dietmar Bartsch, head of the left, it's "no wonder." He calls for a minimum pension of 1,200 euros.
Berlin – The energy crisis and the associated high inflation are causing problems for people on low incomes in particular.
Increasingly, this also includes pensioners with low pensions.
As a result, a growing number of pensioners receive basic social security benefits in addition to their pension.
The
editorial network Germany
reported on Monday with reference to a list from the Federal Statistical Office, which the left-wing faction in the Bundestag requested.
Pension: Left boss warns of increasing poverty in old age
In June of the current year, almost 628,600 people of retirement age received basic security benefits nationwide.
That is around 51,000 people more than in June 2021. According to the report, left-wing faction leader Dietmar Bartsch sees an urgent need for action.
"Poverty in old age is increasing and increasing," he told the
editorial network Germany.
That is "no wonder with unchecked inflation".
"The traffic light must do a lot more to ensure that pensioners get through the winter," Bartsch demanded.
Left boss demands minimum pension of 1200 euros
“We need a protective shield against poverty in old age.
The prices for electricity and gas must be capped before winter, not afterwards.” The energy flat rate of 300 euros must be increased for small to medium-sized pensions, said the left-wing parliamentary group leader.
He also called for a comprehensive reform of the basic pension.
"In view of the ten percent inflation, the federal government should convert the insufficient basic pension into a poverty-proof, solidarity-based minimum pension of 1,200 euros," said Bartsch.
