Senior officials in the religious sector are promoting a parliamentary organization that will deal with religion and state Israel today

2022-10-24T20:56:30.290Z

The organization will unite a series of strong institutions, including Zahar, Emunah, Atim and Beit Hillel • Rabbi Feuerstein: "Sometimes there is a feeling that Naftali Bennett has sold us cheap, but there is still a living and kicking religious Zionism that wants to make decisions and change reality"

Leaders in the religious-national sector are initiating the establishment of an umbrella organization that will unite a series of organizations operating in a variety of fields and influencing the agenda.

The goal: to create a significant extra-parliamentary force, which will enable the implementation of broad moves concerning religious and state issues in the approach of the religious-nationalist mainstream.

For years there have been quite a few religious-nationalist organizations that greatly influence the discourse in the Israeli public.

Among other things, the Tzahar rabbinic organization, which operates in the field of marriage and kashrut;

"Amona" organization, which operates one of the leading Israeli dormitory chains;

the religious kibbutz;

rabbinic organization "Beit Hillel";

"Pinima" and "Atim" organizations.

What the organizations have in common, most of them are from the classic religious Zionist house, which is located in the mainstream and seeks to produce a respectful Judaism that accepts the other.

Two leading rabbis in the religious sector are now working - Rabbi Rafi Feuerstein, who serves, among other things, as the associate chairman of the Tzahar organization, and Rabbi Meir Nahorai, chairman of the Beit Hillel organization and rabbi of the Mashoat Yitzhak settlement - to unite these institutions and others into an umbrella organization.

The organization will also operate on the political level and will make it possible to promote broad moves that will have an impact when it comes to religious and state issues.

A fateful year

"Some of the religious nationalists found themselves without representation in the current political system," explains Rabbi Feuerstein and adds: "This is a critical year, in which, among other things, we deal with public transportation on Shabbat, the appointment of chief rabbis and city rabbis, the fate of kashrut, and more. We want to make our voice heard in a uniform and clear manner The initiative to establish the roof organization comes from a number of rabbis who identify with the Gavizon-Madan Convention."

The plan of the rabbis is to establish a lobby that will already influence the next election, both if it will be a long time from now and if it is just around the corner due to the political instability.

"Religious Zionism is awakening. The body that has already been euthanized is alive, kicking, and looking for a home," says Rabbi Feuerstein.

"There is sometimes a feeling that Naftali Bennett has sold us cheap, but there is still religious Zionism that seeks to make decisions and change reality. There are a number of organizations that are interested in joining the project. We are interested in including organizations as well as educators and influential people in the sector."

According to him, organizations such as Hutam, which is considered more ultra-Orthodox, will also be welcomed if they so desire and accept the principles.

The new initiative is not theoretical.

Even before its establishment, a series of rabbis signed a letter in which they called on the heads of the political parties and the voters to put the issue of the Jewish identity of the state in a central place.

"The issues on the public agenda are the responsibility for the socio-economic periphery, the public Shabbat, Jewish education in schools, core studies, the kosher issue, the court system, including conversion courts, the responsibility for the unity of the Jewish people, the status of the Chief Rabbinate and the family. We call for the adoption the principle of national consensus as a basis for dealing with the challenges we pointed out and many others."
