A former Russian diplomat believes that Vladimir Putin has been lucky so far in the Ukraine war.

But that is over now.

Possibly with drastic consequences.

Moscow/Kyiv – With the partial mobilization of the Russian army at the end of September, Vladimir Putin showed that he will not let up in the Ukraine conflict.

Above all, the Russian president wants to retain his power, says former Russian diplomat Boris Bondarev.

According to him, Putin's "lucky streak in Ukraine is over."

From Russia's point of view, the war could actually be going better at the moment.

Recently, Russian losses in Ukraine have increased significantly.

According to Bondarev, this is no coincidence.

"I think he's been very lucky in the 20 years he's been in power," the Russian ex-diplomat told

.

In his opinion, Putin is not particularly "smart", he emphasized.

A thesis that he shares with the opposition Leonid Volkov, among others.

Bondarev believes the Russian president is capable of going much further than before in the Ukraine war: "Vladimir Putin would sacrifice 10 or 20 million Russian soldiers just to win this war."

The ex-diplomat is convinced that, ultimately, it is about Putin's "political survival": If Russia loses the war, the Kremlin chief will have to explain himself - to the point of the risk of being deposed.

Accordingly, Bondarev is convinced that a defeat in Ukraine would mean the "end" of Putin.

Who is Boris Bondarev?

Boris Bondarev was the Russian diplomat at the United Nations in Geneva (Switzerland) from 2019 to 2022.

In May 2022 he resigned in protest against the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

Since then he has lived in exile.

Putin's popularity is likely to decline

The planned expansion of the Russian army from January 2023 also indicates that Putin probably does not want to relax in the Ukraine war.

At the same time, dissatisfaction with the president is probably growing among the Russian population.

The political scientist Christopher Fettweis from the US American Tulane University believes that public opinion is "turning against Putin", as he

Beyond that, there are some signs of a shift in sentiment in Russia.

For the partial mobilization, Russia has to resort to bizarre recruitment tactics.

For many men, the motivation for armed struggle in Ukraine is not particularly high.

The Russian opposition figure Ilya Ponomarev even believes that Russia is on the verge of a revolution.
