Herrsching - war and energy crisis - how should a municipality behave in this situation?

Skipping the Christmas market to save energy and set an example?

Do without the Christmas lights in the streets and Christmas trees?

The council made a decision on Monday evening.

The council representatives discussed the topic intensively at the most recent meeting and unanimously agreed to hold the Christmas market again this year after a two-year break due to the corona pandemic.

Mayor Christian Schiller calculated how much money the market costs each year and spoke of a sum of around 30,000 to 32,000 euros.

The electricity costs amount to around 500 euros, according to Schiller.

On the one hand, the municipality must curb its investments, since the new financial year is also about subsidies for the clubs.

On the other hand, some clubs depend on the income from sales at the Christmas market.

The trend is that municipal Christmas markets are often canceled this year and commercial markets are mostly held.

Christmas market in Herrsching is a meeting place

The market is needed as a meeting place, argued Alexander Keim (FDP) for the implementation of the Christmas market on the third weekend in Advent in the usual form.

Dr.

Rainer Guggenberger (citizens' community) so.

Anke Rasmussen (Greens) can also imagine a somewhat smaller market with music, a visit from St. Nicholas and short prayers.

Are the stand operators interested in participating again this year?

Wolfgang Schneider (SPD) asked about the interest on the part of the stand operators.

Two clubs were not interested this year, it said.

Gertraud Köhl (Greens) suggested using more candles than electric light to illuminate the market, and Hannelore Doch (CSU) referred to the market in Dießen, which can be carried out without electric light.

The plan is for the market to take place as usual on Saturday, December 10, 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Sunday, December 11, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be no street lighting at Christmas this year

The vast majority (21:2) of the council decided that there will be illuminated Christmas trees in Herrsching and the districts in the usual places.

The Christmas street lighting, on the other hand, will be omitted.

The vote against the Christmas lights on the streets was narrow with 12:11 votes.

Mayor Christian Schiller explained that the Christmas lights are coupled with the street lighting and that installing a timer for the Christmas lights is "too much effort".

Voices from the Herrsching municipal council

"We will not save the world if we save the lamps, but it is symbolic," says Thomas Bader (CSU).

The Greens in the committee appealed for the waiver.

Gerd Mulert suggested putting up a few more Christmas trees instead of the Christmas street lights.

According to Schiller, however, there are no fairy lights for this.

That's why this year there will only be illuminated Christmas trees in the usual places - at the Kurparkschlösschen, in Widdersberg, Breitbrunn, at the kindergarten and at the town hall.
