It is an important step in the context of the Erdinger S-Bahn ring closure: The actual expansion of the district road ED 5 starts on the day after All Saints' Day.

Schwaig – The preparatory work for the detour routes was already a tremendous effort, and now that they have been completed, things can really get going on district road ED 5.

On the day after the rather quiet All Saints' Day, the heavy machines roll on.

The starting signal for the expansion, including the third lane, two new bridges and some other innovations, will be given on Wednesday, November 2nd.

It is not possible without a complete closure between the Eichenstraße roundabout in Schwaig and Erdinger Allee.

This is announced by the Freising State Building Authority.

Work is done at 850 meters

The expansion is part of the mega-project S-Bahn Ringschluss Erding.

Now the building authority is getting started on behalf of the Erding district.

The work takes place on an approximately 850 meter long section of Lohstraße, which is the said district road, between the Eichenstraße roundabout in Schwaig and Erdinger Allee (state road 2584).

In the course of the S-Bahn ring closure with its planned stop at Schwaigerloh with a large park & ride facility and the associated increase in traffic, two new bridges are required for the ED 5: a replacement structure over Erdinger Allee and a new bridge under which the trains will in future drive through.

Left-turn lane, pedestrian and cycle path

The ED 5 on the northern outskirts of Schwaig will have a third lane, additional left-turn lanes at two intersections, and a footpath and cycle path from the roundabout to Eschenallee.

In addition, the ramp to Erdinger Allee will be rebuilt and a new connection to the future Schwaigerloh S-Bahn station and the Lear Corporation will be created.

Finally, Eschenallee will also be extended and expanded to ED 5.

Südring blocked again and again

"For the time of the construction work, a diversion is signposted," says building authority spokesman Thomas Jakob.

It runs in both directions via Freisinger Straße, Südring, St 2584, Flughafentangente Ost and St 2084. According to Jakob, during the course of the work, “the Südring is repeatedly closed for a few days”.

Then take the detour via General Aviation Road east of the airport.

Ramp and traffic light for farmers

Agricultural commercial vehicles are directed from the ED 5 onto Freisinger Straße and then onto the Südring north towards Flughafentangente Ost.

At the level of the ED 5/St 2584 ramp, you will return to the ED 5 via the direct ramp. The Südring, a motor road, will be opened to agricultural traffic between Freisinger Straße and ED 5.

"So that the farmers do not meet on the single-lane direct ramp, there are traffic lights below and above the ramp so that the ramp can only be used in one direction," explains Jakob.

Below the direct ramp there is a "parking area" for agricultural vehicles so that they do not have to wait in the middle of St 2584.

Freisinger Strasse closed to cyclists

Cyclists are not allowed to ride on Freisinger Straße during the construction work.

Your detour route runs along the existing footpath and cycle path from the south to the Lohstraße roundabout and continues on Lohstraße through the industrial park to the temporary bridge over the east intercept ditch back to the airport circular route.

The diversion applies to both directions of travel.

Work lasts more than two years

The work is extensive, not least because of the bridges.

When asked, the building authority says that they will probably last until the end of 2024.

First of all, starting next week, the new construction of the two bridges will be prepared, large areas of asphalt and gravel will be removed.

Excavation will then begin on the existing embankment for the construction of the new bridge over the tracks.

Construction site traffic runs north over the old bridge on Erdinger Allee.

It will be demolished when the earthwork on the second bridge is complete.

According to Jakob, this should be the case at the beginning of 2023.

The costs for the expansion - around 15 million euros - are shared by the municipality of Oberding, the district and Deutsche Bahn.
