Criminal gangs operating in northern Central America include Barrio-18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13).
Born in the 80s in neighborhoods of Los Angeles (California), they then spread to the countries of origin of delinquents expelled from the United States.
The maras, as well as the cartels of drug traffickers, hold large sectors of the population of northern Central America under their thumb, putting the three countries among the most dangerous in the world, outside the conflict zone.
More than 2400 murders in Honduras
In the first six months of the year, more than 2,400 murders were committed in Honduras, notes Migdonia Ayestas, director of the University's Observatory of Violence.
With a population of 10 million inhabitants, Honduras recorded a murder rate of 18.47 in the first half of the year and expects a rate of 37 murders/100,000 inhabitants for the whole of 2022 (down, however, compared to 2021 with a rate of 42 murders/100,000 inhabitants).
