Update from October 26, 10:10 a.m .:

The partial solar eclipse attracted many onlookers outside around noon on Tuesday.

With special goggles or filters, one could watch the moon move in front of the sun.

Especially in southern Germany, the spectacle was easy to watch due to the clear weather.

The next solar eclipse in Germany will not take place until 2025.

But why is the celestial event so rare?

According to the Association of Star Friends, a solar eclipse can only occur at new moon and only when the moon is exactly between the earth and the sun.

Due to the inclination of the moon's orbit, it usually passes above or below the sun.

Therefore, there are only a maximum of two to four solar eclipses on earth per year.

At the Hamburg Planetarium, people with goggles watched the partial solar eclipse.

Solar eclipse: how does the phenomenon arise?

A solar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon are in a line and the moon covers the sun.

The astrology platform kosmos.de

explains that for a solar eclipse to occur, there must be a new moon, which means that the moon must be in the daytime sky

.

A solar eclipse does not occur with every new moon.

Most of the time, the moon moves north or south of the sun.

During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun.

If the umbra does not fall on the earth or not only on parts of the earth, there will be a partial solar eclipse on the corresponding parts of the earth, according to

kosmos.de

.

From the perspective of these locations, the moon covers only part of the sun's disk.

It's getting darker and cooler, like before and after a total solar eclipse, but the stars aren't visible (like they are during a total solar eclipse).

Eclipse is expected for mid-morning to noon on Tuesday, October 25, 2022.

The eclipse can also be observed in partial phases from Central Europe, reports the astrology work "Cosmos Heaven Year 2022" by Hans-Ulrich Keller.

In partial phases - this means that only a few percent of the sun's disk will be covered by the moon.

The eclipse will also be visible in parts of Greenland, Iceland, the North Atlantic, larger parts of Europe and Asia, and northeast Africa.

The eclipse belongs to the Saros cycle No. 124 and is the 55th solar eclipse in this cycle, according to the "Cosmos Heavenly Year 2022".

In Europe, a maximum of one third of the sun is covered by the moon

The degree of coverage decreases from northeast to southwest, reports the astrology work "Kosmos Himmelsjahr 2022" by Hans-Ulrich Keller: In Germany, the eclipse is - theoretically - most visible from Berlin: 32.2 percent of the sun is covered here.

For the eye, however, the difference to the approximately 23.6 percent covered in Munich or the darkened 22.1 percent in Cologne is probably not perceptible.

Partial solar eclipse on October 25, 2022: This is how you can observe the event

The eclipse begins at 9:58 a.m. in Iceland and ends at 2:02 p.m. on the Arabian Peninsula.

In Germany, the eclipse can be observed in the time window between 11.05 a.m. and 12.20 p.m.

The best way to observe a solar eclipse is with solar eclipse glasses - especially in the case of a partial solar eclipse, the solar radiation hitting the eye is still very strong despite the darkening.

Solar eclipse glasses are equipped with a special film that only lets through about 1/100,000 of the sun's radiation.

The foil alone - glued to a hole in cardboard - has the same effect.

The foils and glasses are available on the Internet or from an optician.

Caution: Solar eclipse glasses should not be used to look through normal binoculars or telescopes.
