Politico has revealed that the United States has deployed an advanced version of its B61-12 basic nuclear bomb to NATO bases.
The newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that there is a secret US telegram stating that “American officials informed their NATO allies, during a closed meeting in the Belgian capital, Brussels, about bringing forward the date of arrival of the upgraded B61-12 gravity bomb, to be in next December, after it was scheduled To put it forward next spring,” noting the need to present a summary to decision makers of what was discussed between defense ministers during the Brussels summit.
The cable added that 15 member states of the alliance have expressed their concerns about the possibility of some countries acquiescing to Russian President Vladimir Putin's nuclear threats.
According to the newspaper, the message behind the publication of the first batch of American bombs in December may be a way to reassure its European allies, who feel the danger coming from Moscow.
For his part, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder confirmed that the modernization of US nuclear weapons B61 has been underway for years, to issue the updated B61-12 and is not linked to the Ukraine crisis.
