Marseille: our five favorite hotels near the Old Port

2022-10-28T06:46:03.001Z

The Phocaean city has established itself as a getaway destination all year round. To put down your suitcases, for a weekend or a longer stay, here is our selection of addresses in the city center, at the foot of the Bonne Mère.

Le Petit Nice, exclusive address facing the sea

On the rocks of Malmousque, below the Corniche, this chic and relaxed five-star inn is the favorite intimate address of celebrities.

Its 16 rooms (soon to be 17) interact with the omnipresent sea.

Rudy Ricciotti, the architect of the Mucem and the Marseille painter Gérard Traquandi signed the renovation of most of them in 2016. Sober and refined style, sand colors and natural materials, they compose a soft and soothing cocoon.

Outside, we love the terrace with swimming pool overlooking the sea and the gardens with tropical accents.

The restaurant, where Gérald Passedat officiates, was until recently the only three-starred address in Marseille.

The pluses:

the stunning view of the open sea, the feeling of being out of town, the family spirit of this institution run by the Passedat family since 1917.

The minus:

the view of the sea… But also of the car park from the wellness area opened last June (a constraint imposed by the configuration of the hotel).

The price:

from €250 per double room.

A la carte breakfast, from €39.

Le Petit Nice, Anse de Maldormé, Corniche JF Kennedy, 17 rue des Braves, 13007 Marseille.

The seaside, a big bowl of iodine

In Marseille, Les Bords de Mer. A hotel with 19 rooms, all of which open onto the Mediterranean.

WE ARE CONTENT(S)

The impression of being in a ship ready to set sail is essential in this four-star Art Deco hotel leaning over the waves, on the edge of Catalans beach.

The 19 rooms?

Luxurious cabins, facing the sea, with terrace or balcony for the most part.

The decoration, combining natural wood and ceramic tiles around a palette of pastel shades, fades before the beauty of the horizon.

We love the spa carved into the rock and the (small) swimming pool perched at the top of the hotel.

The rising young chef Camille Gandolfo is in charge of the restaurant and also signs the “finger food” of the rooftop bar on the 2nd floor, very popular for its view.

The pluses:

the panorama with the highlight being the sunset over the Frioul islands;

the possibility of accessing the swimming pools of the Cercle des Nageurs located on the other side of the beach.

The least:

as in a ship, some will feel the crampedness of the building in the common areas (especially in winter) where large spaces are limited.

The price:

from €286 per night in a double room with breakfast.

Seaside, 52 Corniche Kennedy, 13007 Marseille.

Mercure Marseille Center Bompard La Corniche, a haven of peace

Here is an unsuspected four-star, hidden among the beautiful villas of the Bompard district on the heights of the Corniche.

Nico Gomez

Here is an unsuspected four-star, hidden among the beautiful villas of the Bompard district on the heights of the Corniche.

Acacias, plane trees and cedars shade the garden overlooking the majority of the 50 rooms (soon to be 55) distributed in small buildings.

Nourished by the Mediterranean, the decoration of the hotel in a contemporary spirit plays the card of blues and panoramic wallpapers adorned with cypresses and umbrella pines.

Some rooms have a balcony or terrace on one level, with outdoor furniture.

Upcoming work will transform the restaurant area with the aim of making it a prominent address in the district.

The pluses:

the green setting, the swimming pool, rather large, out of sight, and on-site parking.

The least:

some common areas deserve a facelift, planned as part of the work.

The price:

from €140 per night in a double room with buffet breakfast.

Mercure Marseille Center Bompard La Corniche, 2 rue des Flots Bleus, 13007 Marseille.

On the quays of the Old Port, near the town hall, this four-star cultivates a

fifties

spirit with decoration inspired by the great names of modernism from Charlotte Perriand to Miró or Calder.

Formica furniture with a sleek design, graphic patterns in the upholstery and a palette of primary colors give a unique character to the 48 rooms of this 8-storey building, built in the 1950s. Spacious, bright, almost always with a balcony, they all open with a large bay window on the Old Port dominated by Notre-Dame de la Garde.

The bathrooms with a black and white checkerboard are very successful.

The restaurant offers a brasserie menu.

The pluses:

the grandiose view, the location close to many points of interest (museums, shuttle to the islands, etc.), the unique style.

The least:

the hum of the street and vehicles on the Old Port is perceptible during the day.

The price:

from €166 per night in a double room with buffet breakfast.

Maison Montgrand, a delicious secret courtyard in town

A charming boutique hotel which has taken up residence in five buildings on rue Montgrand, in the heart of the city.

Marion Pizzetta

Near the courthouse, a few moldings on a facade 35 rue Montgrand… It is the announcement of the high ceilings and a cozy atmosphere that we discover with delight on the ground floor of a former private mansion of the 19th century transformed into a restaurant, cocktail bar, tea room and concept store.

Maison Montgrand opens onto a large shaded courtyard, ideal for sunny days.

On the other side of the street, three 5-storey buildings (favor the upper levels for clarity) accommodate 49 three-star rooms, with a Scandinavian spirit, stylized by designer lighting and blond wood furniture.

A final building houses 13 apartments.

The pluses:

the large courtyard in the heart of the city, the "house" spirit of the address with a lively side, the good value for money.

The least:

you have to cross the street to reach, from the bedroom, the main house and the breakfast room.

The price:

from €110 per night in a (small) double room with breakfast.

Maison Montgrand, 35 rue Montgrand, 13006 Marseille.
