Residents of a Mexican town were stunned to see a dog running down the street with a human head in its mouth.

Authorities in the violence-ridden state of Zacatecas confirmed the incident, saying Thursday that police finally managed to remove the dog's head from its muzzle.

A law enforcement official who was not authorized to be quoted by name stated that the head and other body parts had been left in an ATM in the town of Monte Escobedo, in the center of the country, late on Sunday. Wednesday.

Drug cartels in Mexico often leave notes next to piles of dismembered human remains, as a way to intimidate rivals or authorities.

According to the newspaper El Universal, the identity of the victim is not yet known, and the investigation was carried out by the Investigative Police and experts from the Zacatecas Attorney General's Office.
