Building fire near Nancy: 98-year-old woman dead, 29 people rescued

A 98-year-old woman died and 29 people were rescued after a violent fire which partially destroyed a six-storey building in Essey-lès-Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle) on Saturday, we learned from the firefighters.

Up to 65 firefighters were engaged.

Two of them were slightly poisoned by the fumes.

Three fire starts in 18 months in the building

The fire, which spread vertically through the stairwell, mainly burned the 3rd and 4th floors.

It was declared extinct around 3:00 p.m.

According to the regional daily Est Républicain, which quotes residents, three other fires have been observed over the past 18 months, in this building located in a town of some 8,700 inhabitants, east of Nancy.
