The time change accompanies crucial questions every year: Will the clock be put forward or backward?

But also: When will the time change this fall?

Munich - In autumn, the leaves fall from the trees, the temperatures drop, the days are getting shorter and at some point it's time to change the clocks again.

But when exactly do we jump from summer to winter time in Germany and many other European countries?

Many people rack their brains over this year after year.

Because it would be particularly annoying to miss the right time, to be ahead of the curve and to show up much too early for an appointment.

Is it already this weekend - so on October 16th - already so far?

The clear answer is: No!

We still have two weeks of summer time ahead of us.

Since 1996, the rule has been that it ends on the last Sunday in October.

That's October 30 this year - so the time change can hardly take place later in the year than it will in 2022.

Time change 2022: Winter time begins on October 30 at 3 a.m

Most people will miss the exact time because it is in the middle of the night.

At 3am on October 30th the clocks will go back to 2am so we gain an hour.

This actually makes this the longest day of the year - let's take the pure number of hours, minutes or seconds as a benchmark.

Digital clocks and radio-controlled clocks receive a corresponding signal when summer time ends and winter time begins and adjust themselves independently.

On the other hand, with analogue clocks such as wristwatches or wall clocks, we have to do it ourselves.

Real watch lovers have a lot to change on October 30th.

The time displays in digital devices such as computers, tablets or cell phones also change automatically.

So there are actually no more excuses if you have missed the end of daylight saving time and show up an hour early for an appointment.

Time change in retrospect: Used in Germany in both world wars

On October 30th we will switch back to the actual zone time, as also reported by

.

The so-called Central European Time, short CET.

In addition to winter time, it is also called standard or normal time.

On the other hand, Central European Summer Time, which is one hour ahead of it, is abbreviated to CEST.

The background to the change is the hope of saving energy - especially on long summer evenings.

This also explains the beginnings in Germany, because the time change was carried out for the first time in 1916 - i.e. during the First World War.

Thus, the attacks on summer days were possible for a longer period of time.

The procedure was also retained in 1917 and 1918 and then used again in 1940 during the course of the Second World War.

Time change in Germany: Since 1996, summer time has always ended at the end of October

After the last time change took place in 1949, there was a break of three decades.

It was not until 1980 that summer time was used again in both parts of Germany - this time also as a reaction to the western neighboring countries, which were already using time changes again due to the consequences of the oil crisis of 1973.

In 1996, the EU standardized the regulation - by then, for example, Germany had already switched to winter time at the end of September.

The summer time phase in the EU now lasts 30 or 31 weeks, as it begins at the end of March.

It is therefore longer than the normal time, which then has a good 20 weeks left.

To what extent the time change really leads to energy savings is quite controversial.

In addition, critics point out that the biorhythms of humans and animals get mixed up.

The voices calling for the two-time rule to be abolished are growing louder year after year.

Time change and the EU: Commission and Parliament are in favor of abolition

In 2018, even the European Commission proposed burying the time change.

Parliament approved the request, which has since put the ball in the hands of the European Council.

The abolition was actually planned for 2021, but a decision is still pending.

According to the European Commission, there are many reasons for ending the time change.

In addition to negative effects on health, more bicycle accidents are being recorded, and energy saving is suffering from the changing times.

It is possible that the time of the time change will soon be over.

But certainly after October 30, 2022.
