“Are we going to rename the 62 French municipalities bearing the name of Saint-Michel?”

TRIBUNE - While several courts have ordered the removal of a statue of the Archangel Saint Michael in Les Sables-d'Olonne, the honorary magistrate Étienne Madranges deplores an aberrant decision with regard to our cultural heritage, where the Christian mark is omnipresent.


Former head of the heritage mission of the Ministry of Justice, Étienne Madranges has published several remarkable works, in particular “Les Palais de justice de France” (LexisNexis, 2011).

He is currently a lawyer at the Versailles Bar.

Judges of an administrative tribunal and an administrative court of appeal decided that a statue of Saint Michael was a religious emblem and had no place in the public space.

In Vendée, at Sables-d'Olonne.

In a department where 63 municipalities have a name beginning with “Saint” or “Sainte”, and 7 others the word “Saint” or “Sainte” in their title.

Seventy municipalities out of the 257 in the Vendée, or 27%, will urgently need to be renamed.

In a France where, out of 34,955 municipalities, nearly 4,600 bear the name of a saint, or 13%.

We have no right to criticize court decisions.

But we have the right to comment on them and, above all, to question ourselves.
