The Justice Department filed two criminal charges in federal court Monday against the man arrested for Friday's brutal attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.
Prosecutors charge David DePape with attempted kidnapping and assault with intent to retaliate against a federal officer by threatening or injuring a member of his family.

He forced his way into the congresswoman's home in San Francisco (California), which was in Washington DC at the time, and hit her 82-year-old husband on the head with a hammer, whom he found in the bedroom of the living place.
Pelosi underwent surgery for a broken skull and was treated at the hospital for other serious injuries.
According to the affidavit, the assailant admitted that he wanted to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and if she told him "the truth" he would let her go;
if she "lied" to him, he would "break her knees" with her hammer, so that he would have to go to Congress in a wheelchair so that the rest of the parliamentarians that her actions could have consequences.
