At an event in Peißenberg, 19 new master farmers were honored.

The celebration was also scientific: A professor from the University of Friedrichshafen spoke about methane, which is also emitted by cows.

"Your cows are not responsible for climate change," he told the audience.

Peißenberg

– District chairman of the farmers’ association, Wolfgang Scholz, was pleased at the district farmers’ day in the “Post” inn at the performance of 19 young farmers.

These were honored for their master’s degree – sometimes with a delay, as the event had been canceled in recent years due to corona.

Accompanied by much applause, the successful master students received their certificates and a voucher for a jacket with the emblem of the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV).

Taffertshofer: "Agriculture is the rock in the surf"

The deputy district administrator, Wolfgang Taffertshofer, joined the congratulations and emphasized the important role played by the BBV in terms of "training" in agriculture.

However, he also pointed out the challenges in this area and addressed the current problems with energy supply, including price increases.

Taffertshofer is sure that the farmers are doing a good job.

"Agriculture is the rock in the surf", praised Taffertshofer and added with regard to the farmers: "They produce reliably every day of the year." In view of the political development, this is not a matter of course, because in the environmental area, people often go over their heads decided beyond agriculture.

After the speeches, the invited speaker, Peer Ederer, honorary professor at the "Zeppelin University" in Friedrichshafen and head of the "Global Food and Agribusiness Network", stepped up to the lectern.

He also encouraged the next generation of farmers: "I am convinced that you have made a fantastic career choice."

Then he turned to the topic of the “mystery of biogenic methane”.

He brought his conclusion – quite unusual – right at the beginning: “Your cows are not responsible for climate change,” he said, looking around the group.

Detailed chemical and physical explanations of why this is so followed.

The professor vividly explained the connections between chemical processes in the atmosphere.

Again and again, from different perspectives, he repeated the statement that methane is not the cause of climate change, even if society considers it to be more relevant to the climate than CO2.

This is only taken from a specific calculation model and is not generally applicable.

In fact, the lifetime of methane in the atmosphere is short because most of it is decomposed by hydroxyl radicals (OH), an "atmospheric detergent".

High methane concentrations can be measured above all where there is increased carbon monoxide pollution, such as in areas with oil production, coal-fired power plants or forest fires.

There, the OH radicals are already so busy with such gases that the methane can penetrate further into the higher layers of the atmosphere, which explains the steady increase in methane that can currently be measured.

Scholz: "We now have arguments in our hands that we are not the bad guys"

"We now have arguments in our hands that we are not the bad guys," Scholz thanked the speaker.

He encouraged the 90 or so attendees to do their best to pass on the newly acquired information to relevant bodies.

Ederer agreed to help.

"You just have to create the stage for me," he appealed to the BBV members.

He is currently in the process of substantiating his hypotheses with another research project.
