District – When the Baden forest official Karl von Drais invented the precursor of today’s bicycle with the wooden wheel called “Draisine” in 1817, no one could have guessed how important pedaling with muscle power or e-assistance is today.

This was shown again at the "City Cycling 2022", where 3,262 district citizens covered a total of 753,330 kilometers, i.e. nineteen times the circumference of the earth.

The crowning glory was the big award ceremony and award ceremony in the conference room of the district office, organized by Tanja Weigl and Eva Brugger from the climate protection department.

They were proud to report the figure of 116 tons of CO2 that the atmosphere was spared.

Vice District Administrator Margit Horner-Spindler thanked the 167 teams for their commitment, with each cyclist covering an average of 231 kilometers in the three-week campaign period.

Of the 287 participating municipalities in Bavaria, six district municipalities made it into the "Top 20": Igling, Apfeldorf, Finning, Denklingen, Thaining and Unterdießen even took first place.

A very special ranking caused a lot of applause.

Four participants were honored as "City Cycling Stars" who did not use their car at all during the campaign: Jörg Riedle, 1st Chairman of the DAV Landsberg, with 1,273 km, his wife Ruth (2nd Vice President of the JWR Landsberg) with 568 km , Geltendorf's mayor Robert Sedlmayr with 438 km and EDEKA department manager Dario Bährle with 155 km.

Incidentally, the EDEKA central warehouse donated 5,000 euros to the Lebenshilfe Landsberg for the purchase of eBikes for sustainable mobility.

The donation resulted from the almost 13,000 kilometers cycled by the 74-strong Lebenshilfe team.

Results in the category “single cyclist women”: 1st Anette Kreiselmayer, 2nd Melanie van Driel, 3rd Barbara Hermann.

“Men’s single cyclists”: 1. Markus Kauth, 2. Hagel Lüttge, 3. Werner Franz.

“Most active cycling teams”: 1. The Wiesbachbikers, 2. VFL Denklingen, 3. JWR Landsberg.

Vice District Administrator Margit Horner-Spindler, who presented the prizes and certificates together with the sponsors, expressly thanked them for their support, without which such a mammoth event as the city cycling would not be possible - including the General German Bicycle Club Landsberg.

At the final get-together, we talked shop for a long time about touring, racing and cargo bikes and of course eBikes.

And about Drai's 1817 invention of the "animal-independent vehicle", triggered by the eruption of the Indonesian volcano Tambora in 1815. This was followed by a series of "summerless" years worldwide with very poor harvests.

The price of oats skyrocketed.

Many horse owners could no longer afford the feed for the no. 1 means of transport at the time and the butchers were booming.

The bicycle market, which is booming today, developed over the years from the "oat crisis".
