A four-year-old girl from Tunisia had to survive the life-threatening crossing of the Mediterranean Sea without her parents.

The child was separated from the mother and father when they tried to board a migrant boat to Italy, reports the British newspaper "Guardian".

The girl, dubbed Linda by Italian authorities, spent a total of 26 hours at sea aboard an overcrowded wooden boat with another 70 migrants from Tunisia before arriving at the port of Lampedusa.

"Linda is doing well and is in a community center for children in Palermo after being transferred from Lampedusa to a community in the province of Agrigento," said Majdi Karbai, one of three Tunisian politicians representing Tunisians living in Italy.

"She keeps asking about her parents and when she can see them again."

The Tunisian authorities are trying to bring the child back to their homeland.

An entry ban to Italy was imposed on her parents.

They are accused of abandoning a minor.

The girl's seven-year-old sister reportedly has a heart condition and needs constant medical attention.

Her parents hoped that the child would receive the necessary treatment in Europe and had prepared a dossier with her medical records before leaving.

The tugboats on the coast of Tunisia have to be reached by sea, and passengers walk or swim to reach the ships.

As Linda's father held her in his arms, he allegedly suddenly heard his wife's screams.

The woman accompanying her other daughter had gone into the water with luggage and was afraid of drowning before reaching the ship.

"At some point, Linda's father had to resign to support the rest of the family, so he temporarily put Linda on the boat," reports one of the Tunisian politicians.

'Meanwhile the captain of the boat saw the big headlights of a truck and thought it was the police.

So he started the engine and drove off, leaving Linda’s family behind.”

The child's parents refuse to speak to the media.

You could be charged with human trafficking.

They were released from prison after news of the girl's arrival in Lampedusa broke.
