Evergreen trees are a real eye-catcher in winter.
Skimmia japonica is particularly pretty and easy to care for.
Then, when other plants have long since lost their leaves and hardly attract a glance in the garden with their bare branches, evergreen shrubs come into their own.

Many know the skimmie, if at all, as a front door decoration or as an eye-catcher in grave decoration ideas for All Saints' Day.
But the evergreen shrub from the rue family also cuts a fine figure as a ground cover or as a hardy container plant.
The following should be noted with Skimmia japonica:

The Skimmie usually does not need winter protection in this country.
If there is severe frost several nights in a row, you should consider protecting the plant with fleece or brushwood.
The red berries develop in late autumn and shine well into spring.
While the Japanese skimmia "Passion" or "Obsession" fascinates gardeners in winter with its bright red berries, spring is the time when the red-brown buds open.
The resulting white and pink blossom attracts numerous insects thanks to its sweet, aromatic scent.

If you keep the Skimmie as a container plant, you should definitely avoid waterlogging.
Watch out if children or curious pets are playing in your garden: all parts of the Skimmia plant are slightly poisonous.
