The Greek Coast Guard announced today that the number of victims of the sinking of a sailing boat carrying dozens of migrants in the Aegean Sea last week has risen to 23.

The Associated Press quoted the guard as saying in a statement: The number of victims of the sinking of the boat rose to 23, including five children, while 34 people are still missing, while 12 migrants survived the sinking in a strait between the Greek islands of Evia and Andros.

Two of the 12 survivors were arrested on suspicion of working for the smuggling ring that organized the migrants' journey.

The recent sinking is the latest in a series of deadly shipwrecks carrying migrants across the sea to Greece.

According to United Nations data, more than 25,000 people have died while trying to cross the Mediterranean on their way to the European Union since 2014.
