The people of Heidelberg have to go to the mayoral election again on November 27th.

At the first attempt on Sunday, none of the nine candidates prevailed with an absolute majority - i.e. more than half of the votes.

According to the city, incumbent Eckart Würzner (independent) received the largest share with 45.89 percent of the votes.

Heidelberg – The former Baden-Württemberg Science Minister Theresia Bauer (Greens) came in second with 28.61 percent.

Würzner has been head of the town hall since 2006 and is supported by the CDU and FDP, among others.

Bauer gave up her post in the cabinet specifically for the candidacy.

The other seven candidates ended up well behind the two on Sunday evening.

Around 107,000 people had been called to the mayoral election.

Voter turnout was 51.33 percent.
