The Mexican authorities announced Sunday, November 7 the arrest of two men “
probably responsible for the homicide in August of a couple of French origin committed in Valladolid in Yucatan (southeast)
”.
Their arrest comes "
53 days after relatives
" of the couple "
reported their disappearance in mid-September
," added the secretariat (ministry) of public security of the state of Yucatan (southeast) in a press release.
No more signs of life
The French authorities had confirmed on October 5 the disappearance of two French nationals in Mexico.
AFP could not confirm Sunday evening with the French Embassy in Mexico City whether the victims are these two missing Frenchmen, Assya Madjour and Michel Amado.
The couple married in May in Valladolid, was installed in this city of the state of Yucatan, where it manages, for several years, two hotels and rooms intended for tourists.
The woman has been in the country for more than two years, while the man has lived there for fifteen years.
Since September 12, the 57-year-old man and the 50-year-old woman had not given any sign of life to their relatives, living in the Basque Country.
"Disturbing" spell
Their fate had been deemed "
very worrying
" by their families, who feared "
a kidnapping
".
By message, before September 12, the man would have indicated looking for land in Chiapas, while his wife spoke of a spiritual center.
"
It seemed weird to us, it's not their
style," Nawel Madjour, sister of the disappeared, told AFP in early October, who also questions the origin of the messages.

We think they have never been to Chiapas and the problem is in Yucatan
,” she added.
By "
using a cell phone of the couple
", the alleged murderers made it appear that the two Frenchmen "
were on a trip to the state of Chiapas
", also in southern Mexico, but hundreds of kilometers from Yucatan, said the press release from the local Department of Public Security.

The two alleged perpetrators, aged 34 and 41, were arrested in central Mexico, respectively in the state of Guanajuato and Querétaro.
Since 1964, 106,000 people have gone missing in Mexico, according to the National Register of Missing Persons.
Some missing persons are foreigners who have been kidnapped for ransom.
