The signing of the agreement between Israel, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates will result in a tripartite cooperation, in which the United Arab Emirates will build a desalination plant in Israel (probably on the West Galilee coast) that will supply water to Jordan, and at the same time the Emirates will build a huge solar farm in the Jordanian desert that will supply several percent of Israel's electricity consumption.
Jordan, which suffers from water shortages and has a very short coastline, will gain a solution to one of the kingdom's most pressing problems;
Israel, which has set ambitious goals for the transition to renewable energies, and does not have enough open areas to establish solar farms, will benefit in this context;
And the emirates, as the executive entrepreneurs of the two projects, will earn money from the countries.
Israel was represented by the Minister for Regional Cooperation, Issawi Frij, who signed at the climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, the memorandum of understanding to advance the next phase of the water-for-electricity agreement with Jordan.
"Today we are leaving to the next government a legacy of cross-border regional cooperation that creates hope for the entire region," said the minister, "when countries join together to promote optimal utilization of natural resources. A legacy of action that proves the power of peace. Today's event would not have happened without the vision and leadership of Energy Minister Karin Elharer who insisted on promoting this important agreement, her flagship project."
