Wessling – On weekdays there are not enough parking spaces for bicycles at the Wessling train station.

In recent years, the former “mobile & worth living” working group has been dealing with the reorganization and expansion of the bicycle racks.

Now there is a concept that the municipal council unanimously approved at its most recent meeting and that should be launched as soon as possible.

As a bicycle-friendly community and provisional member of the AGFK Bayern, Weßling and, above all, Mayor Michael Sturm have dedicated themselves to cycling.

AGFK Bayern is a network of Bavarian municipalities that is committed to the expansion of cycle paths, more safety in cycling and environmentally friendly local mobility

.

Reason enough to promote the issue of parking spaces for bicycles at the train station, which the former working group "mobile & worth living" initiated.

"A long overdue project"

A concept for 290 parking spaces in four different blocks was created around the mobility officer and municipal councilor Gerhard Hippmann (Greens).

A long overdue project, Hippmann emphasized to our newspaper.

He pointed out that "Wessling is the only S-Bahn station on the southwestern S8 without renovated bicycle parking facilities".

As many people as possible should ride their bikes

The declared goal is to get as many people on the bike as possible.

Even if it's just for the ride to the S-Bahn.

The concept was based on a needs report prepared by MVV in 2013, which specified the need for 240 parking spaces and criticized the quality of the 184 existing parking spaces at the station.

"The distances are too narrow and the bikes should also be able to be chained to the frame," explained Sturm.

270 modern and illuminated parking spaces for bicycles are to be created

According to the recommendation, around 270 modern, illuminated parking spaces for bicycles should be created at the station.

From then on things were discussed and planned, while the expansion of the railway for people with disabilities was repeatedly postponed.

And the implementation of the system on the opposite, northern side of the station depends on this.

"This can only occur when the reversing track is completed," reported Sturm.

A new system is planned between the car park and the ramp to the platform

This does not apply to the three blocks that the municipal council unanimously commissioned.

The existing bicycle parking facility at the train station will remain.

However, the gutters have to be renovated and the bicycle racks have to be replaced with a modern variant and the whole thing has to be expanded by eight parking spaces in the long term.

23 more parking spaces are planned at the wheel repair station between the platform and the station building.

"Should the area be required for use with the train station, it can simply be dismantled again," explained Sturm.

A new system is planned in the west between the car park and the ramp to the platform.

The estimated costs for the measures are around 340,000 euros.

The federal government contributes 70 percent and the state 20 percent of the eligible costs.

The funding applications have been submitted but not yet confirmed.

According to Sturm, the owner of the area is Deutsche Bahn.

So-called permission contracts have already been approved and will allow the community to use the building free of charge in the future.

As soon as the contracts have been signed, the Weßlingen municipal company KUGW will start planning and subsequent implementation.

Another system at the new, eastern entrance to the platform is still a dream of the future in order to cover the increasing demand for more than 400 parking spaces in the coming years according to the MVV forecast.
