Is it normal to have gray hair at 20?

2022-11-09T14:45:13.631Z

Should we be worried when white hair shows up in our twenties? An expert explains everything about the appearance of premature canities.

When it comes to white hair, we are not all created equal.

Some see them appear very young, while others will not see them emerge before perimenopause.

“It's all about genetics and heredity.

But there is also the “ethnic” aspect that comes into play”, explains Mélanie Froliger, Head of Hair Clinical Study for René Furterer and the Pierre Fabre group.

“Caucasians are observed to start going gray around their mid-30s in general, while Asians around their late 30s and Africans around their mid-40s.

And this, without distinction between men and women.

Beyond this average, some even begin to spot some in their hair from their twenties.

Nothing to worry about, according to the expert: “The premature appearance of white hair is also linked to heredity, it is genetically programmed.

You have to ask your close family, your parents, to find out from what age they had it for the first time”, advises Mélanie Froliger, who assures that “if it happens gradually, it is normal”.

On the other hand, “if it is an excessive and regular appearance of white hair, do not hesitate to consult a doctor”.

Indeed, these symptoms can potentially indicate pathologies such as poliosis, albinism, canities of drug or chemical origin.

Triggers

If genetics plays an important part, other elements can also precipitate the early arrival of these graying locks.

“The appearance of the first gray hairs is a phenomenon strongly influenced by stress, which can be cumulative or sudden.

But also by other external factors such as pollution or UV rays,” continues Mélanie Frogiger.

Nutrition, micronutrition and taking medication can also have an effect on their depigmentation: “Dietary deficiencies in zinc, copper and selenium, but also a low level of iron have an effect on canities.

Finally, a drug, chemical or hormonal origin can also accelerate or promote it,” adds the specialist.

In general, the first areas to be affected are around the face, at the edge of the scalp and at the temples.

In this kind of situation, there is still hope of regaining your natural hair color: “A German study proves that it can be reversed.

Not in most cases, but it can be.

Indeed, some white hair regains its color when exposure to stress in particular ceases”, concludes the specialist.
